Il présente ses excuses pour sa réponse tardive, étant trop occupé par ses affaires à Londres. Il évoque son fameux ouvrage Hydrodynamics et la référence d'un article publié à ce sujet (1884). Larmor mentionne une lettre à son confrère le mathématicien Alfred Bernard Basset et salue la touchante délégation française présente pour les funérailles de Lord Joseph Lister (1827-1912), chirurgien britannique de renom, pionnier de l'antiseptie. "We were much touched and gratified by the strong French delegation to Lord Lister's funeral last week".
Joseph Larmor avait notamment écrit un article sur les travaux de Basset, dans l'American Journal of Mathematics [Vol. 19, No. 4, Octobre 1897], intitulé "Note on Mr. A. B. Basset's Paper, Theory of the Action of Magnetism on Light".
